Action on Addiction's mission is to reach ever more people affected by addiction.
The YouGov poll we commissioned for Addiction Awareness Week (10-16 June 2019) showed that well over half the British public knows someone who has had an addiction. Sixty nine per cent of those surveyed felt more should be done to support people suffering from an addiction and 70 per cent thought more should be done to support their families. Having been running our Self-Help Addiction Recovery Programme (SHARP) for over 25 years, we know how effective our life-changing recovery programmes can be for both individals and their families. These programmes do not require a residential stay. Instead, treatment is delivered in the form of a day programme from our treatment centres in Liverpool and Essex. SHARP is funded by Liverpool City Council and Essex County Council respectively, and are also available to private paying clients and those on private health insurance schemes. Our treatment centres also offer pre-abstinence interventions, family-focused activities and aftercare. There is very good, independent evidence that our SHARP model is the starting point for long term recovery and abstinence, and that it also leads to improvements in participants’ physical and psychological health, self-efficacy and overall quality of life. Independent evaluation of our community recovery programme in Essex shows that almost 80% of our clients did not return to any treatment service following completion of our programme between 2013 and 2016 (the period of the pilot study).
